Behind the Scene of an Animal Science Student

Experience from the eyes of Kylah Bates

Get to know her and what spark her interest in Animal Science, as well as her biography.

Get to Know About Me

I would like to introduce myself formally: my name is Kylah Bates. I am a student at the illustrious North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University, majoring in animal science. I was born and raised in Greensboro, North Carolina. To understand how I arrived at this point, let's delve into my childhood. Initially, I aspired to be a policewoman, eager to apprehend criminals and assist those in need. As a child, I would playfully incarcerate my classmates during recess using the dome monkey bars as a makeshift jail. However, my mother observed an unusual fascination I had from a young age: dressed in a princess gown, I would collect slugs, frogs, grasshoppers, and any creature I could find in our backyard. All while skillfully keeping my tiara in place. Despite my mother's aversion to animals. I frequently attempted to bring home various critters and strays, luring them with food. It was not until the seventh grade that I discovered the possibility of a career working with animals. Since that revelation, I have remained steadfast in my career choice, undeterred by any obstacles.

(Update) I graduated from North Carolina Agriculture and Technical State University in the class of Spring 2026. My degree in Animal Science.

Career

Objective

My career aspirations are to work in a field where I can care for animals, whether as a doctor or an assistant. I'm still deciding which type of animals to specialize in, as I enjoy working with a variety of species, including domestic, farm, zoo, and aquatic animals. With experience in caring for farm and domestic animals, as well as some wildlife, I aim to volunteer or work at a zoo and an aquatic center to better understand where my passion truly lies. My previous experience shadowing surgeries at a veterinary clinic was enjoyable, and I look forward to more opportunities to observe or participate in such procedures in the future.
